Mary Robinette Kowal

Encore un recueil de nouvelles de la part d’une auteure dont j’avais pu découvrir le talent par la distribution d’une nouvelle par le site de l’éditeur TOR.

Quelques mots sur l'auteur. Mary Robinette Kowal was the 2008 recipient of the Campbell Award for Best New Writer and her short story "For Want of a Nail" won the 2011 Hugo. Her stories have appeared in Strange Horizons, Asimov’s, and several Year's Best anthologies. She is the author of Shades of Milk and Honey and Glamour in Glass (Tor 2012).

Mary, a professional puppeteer and voice actor, has performed for LazyTown (CBS), the Center for Puppetry Arts, Jim Henson Pictures and founded Other Hand Productions. Her designs have garnered two UNIMA-USA Citations of Excellence, the highest award an American puppeteer can achieve. She also records fiction for authors such as Kage Baker, Cory Doctorow and John Scalzi.

Mary lives in Chicago with her husband Rob and over a dozen manual typewriters.

Ce que j'en ai pensé. J’ai découvert cette auteure avec un très beau texte, The Lady Astronaut of Mars – prix Hugo 2014 dans la catégorie novelette, qui m’avait donné envie d’en lire plus. L’univers de ce texte a depuis été développé dans une série dont le premier tome est sorti en 2018.

Ce recueil de nouvelles contient de nombreux textes de fantasy de de SF couvrant une grande partie de son travail d’écrivaine. Certains textes sont beaucoup plus aboutis que d’autres mais la qualité d’écriture est bien là présente.

Personnellement, ma préférence va à ses textes SF plutôt que fantasy, je trouve que son imaginaire se développe beaucoup mieux dans ces univers ci. Je vais donc très probablement m’orienter vers sa série d’histoire alternative The Lady Astronaut qui devrait mieux me correspondre.

Son talent d’écrivaine se confirme donc avec ce recueil, la justesse de ton et l’émotion qui s’en dégage m’ont rappelé les histoires de Kij Johnson dont je suis un grand fan. Ce sont assurément deux talents littéraires à suivre ces prochaines années.
